Kira + Matt
9/9/21 Ole Hanson Beach Club, San Clemente, CA
I met Kira through Roots, the Beauty Underground, in Laguna Beach, CA, where I do organic haircolor and cuts + bridal hair. Shiloah + I did her hair and makeup trial there at the salon to make sure we got her clean beauty look just right. I loved Kira’s beachy vibe and her love for non-toxic beauty. She also has such a beautiful spirit, so we knew that getting her and the bridal party would be special. I asked Kira to share with me how she + Matt planned the perfect, intentional wedding.
BBW -Was there something you chose to do differently for the ceremony that felt extra special?'
Kira- “One thing that we really loved about our wedding was that Matt's dad handmade the arch we stood under for the ceremony. It was this gorgeous hexagonal wood arch decorated with beautiful flowers. To this day, Matt's dad has the arch in his backyard as decoration. It was so sentimental to know that he spent time handcrafting this with us in mind and it ended up being the centerpiece to many of our most treasured photos.”
BBW- What ways did you bring intention into the wedding day?
Kira-”We chose to be intentional about many aspects of the wedding. My husband, Matt and I are both musicians and music fans, so we had fun putting a lot of energy into choosing the music for the wedding. It was important to us to include meaningful songs throughout the day and to reflect on the moments that made those songs important to us. The greatest part is that now many of those songs take on a whole new meaning and when we listen to them today, we get to reminisce about how beautiful and special our wedding day felt. Another aspect we were intentional about was choosing a venue that represented us as individuals, and as a couple. We both grew up surfing and this is a major part of our lives together. Surfing is something that we are both passionate about individually and love to do on our own. However, when we get to surf together, it is the greatest magic in the world. I love that I get to go on surf dates with Matt every week. It is such a beautiful way that we connect with one another and hold space for each other. We knew it was important to us to choose a venue by the beach, close to places we grew up surfing together, and this allowed our wedding experience to capture that same magic that we feel in the water together (but on a whole new level!).”
BBW- Can you share anything about the wedding, the bridal suite experience, or practices leading up to the wedding that made your day unique?
Kira- “One of the most special parts of our wedding experience actually started the night before our wedding day. Matt and I decided to spend the night separate from each other to honor and celebrate our time before marriage and to be intentional about starting a new chapter in our lives as a married couple. Matt and I had been together for over 9 years before getting married. I chose to spend the night in a hotel near the wedding venue. This night was full of intention for me. The night started with me having pizza with Matt's family by the pool, and then I retired early to my room. It was important to me to spend time journaling and reflecting on our experiences together thus far, and to capture my mindset before getting married. I set up some candles and crystals, set my intentions, and had a nice, gentle yoga practice followed by a lovely meditation. It was such a beautiful experience to reflect on my life as a single person, then as Matt's partner, and to dream of what life would feel like as his wife. It was really special to me to have this time alone and to honor that time ceremoniously. Matt also had a night of intention and celebration. He spent the night at home going over the final touches on his vows when he got a call from Reid, his best man. Reid asked Matt if he wanted to go night surfing. Matt has surfed his whole life, so this was a fitting way to honor himself before the wedding. They went down to the beach and surfed from midnight to 2am. They used this time to celebrate Matt's transition from bachelor life to married life and to carry in a sense of play into this next chapter. I believe that the way Matt and I chose to spend the night before our wedding really made the wedding day feel calm, exciting and special. It really was the most incredible, beautiful day and I could not have asked for a better experience. It felt like pure magic to have my bridal party, family and hair and makeup team arrive the next morning. I felt relaxed, elated, and really made sure to spend time pausing, breathing and taking it all in. It really was a wedding with intention and our marriage continues to embody that.”
